Vertical Forest in Caixa Forum of Barcelona

Última modificación:

Discover the incredible Caixaforum Vertical Forest project, an innovative combination of architecture and nature that creates a sustainable and green urban environment. With a total surface area of 755 m², this vertical forest consists of two main parts: 535 m² of vegetated surface on the façade and 220 m² of enclosures.

The project achieves a maximum height of 12 metres and a maximum width of 50 metres. To guarantee its stability, a solid self-supporting metal structure made of 45 tonnes of galvanised steel is used. This structure has 22 vertical portal frames made of 140×140 mm tubular profiles, distributed over 4 levels of 2.5 metres in height each.

The area of the mixed vegetated façade is 535 m² and includes different elements. 450 m² of hydroponic modules with rockwool substrate are used, which allows a wide variety of plants to be grown. In addition, 85 m² of climbing plants are used, which grow on a metal mesh, giving the structure a green and natural look. Fifteen large trees of nine different species are also suspended above the façade, adding beauty and diversity to the project. In total, around 22 000 plants are used, including 7 climbing plant species, 13 hanging species and 20 shrub species.

To ensure adequate irrigation of all plants, a drip irrigation system is implemented. This system consists of 11 irrigation sectors and uses 500 linear metres of drip irrigation pipe. In addition, 2 pumps are installed for water recirculation and fertigation. It is important to note that the project aims to be self-sufficient in water consumption. To achieve this, 13 accumulation tanks of 2,000 litres each are used, located inside the self-supporting structure. This allows an irrigation autonomy of up to 15 days, and even 7 days during the driest months.

In addition, the Caixaforum Vertical Forest project contemplates the restoration of 360 m² of façade surface, restoring beauty and functionality to the structure and promoting sustainability and the presence of nature in urban environments.

In short, the Caixaforum Vertical Forest is an impressive project that integrates vegetation into architecture in an innovative way. With its solid metal structure, wide variety of plants and efficient irrigation system, this project demonstrates how it is possible to combine natural beauty with urban life in a sustainable way.
